WL Special Edition Newsletter

A Blast from the Past

Archival Washington Labs video featuring Doctor Norm Violette in the early days

This special edition of the Washington Labs newsletter is a little different.

Instead of our usual technical updates, we wanted to pause and simply say thank you — to our incredible WL team, and to you, our friends, clients, and subscribers who have been part of this journey over the years.

We’re sharing a rare piece of Washington Labs history: archival footage from the early days, featuring Doctor Norm and a glimpse of where it all began. It’s a fond look back at the curiosity, integrity, and dedication that helped shape the foundation of WL and continue to guide us today.

This season feels like the right time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the people and moments that have inspired us — past and present.

Thank you for being part of our story. Here’s a small blast from the past, shared with gratitude.

Warm wishes,

Washington Labs

Inside Washington Labs (1992): Doctor Norm’s EMI Lessons & Young Mike Violette This rare archival footage captures Doctor Joseph L.N. Violette (“Doctor Norm”) and a young Mike Violette demonstrating foundational EMI/EMC concepts in a way only the early days of Washington Laboratories could deliver. You’ll see: • Cable shielding failures (and the classic cable wiggle test)

  • Aperture radiation and fingerstock fixes
  • Magnetic field interference on CRT monitors
  • Conducted emissions from everyday devices
  • Early EMI diagnostics using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and turntables

• Washington Labs’ origins — and Mike’s earliest on-camera explanation of the company’s mission
