Energy Efficiency Requirements for Electronic Products

Energy is one of today’s hottest topics. Energy efficiency is a top priority as the expansion of new products draws on the demand from the electrical power grid.

The Environmental Protection Agency has developed stringent requirements for devices and products to drive the reduction of energy and, in turn, to reduce the emissions of carbon from fossil fuels and relieve strain on the environment. As a practical matter, the compliance of a device to the ENERGYSTAR requirements saves consumers money.

Better use of our resources is also a strategic issue, as disruption in energy supply chains causes economic uncertainty.

Energy Efficiency Requirements for Electronic Products

This webinar will provide an overview of the ENERGYSTAR program at the EPA and will highlight the efforts in the public and private sector to improve the efficiency of our resource usages.

1. The Energy Star Program Overview: Eamon Monahan, EPA

Eamon Monahan will provide an overview of the origins of the program including the value and impact of reduction of energy consumption and CO2. Millions of dollars of energy savings have been realized. As the program was restructured from a self-certification to third party certification program, the EPA created a program based on the internationally-accepted ISO Guide 65 and ISO 17025 standards. The foundation of the Energy Star is third party accreditation, which has proven successful in many other product certification schemes. Mr. Monahan will also discuss upcoming product categories and the impact on design and operation of products. Test laboratories will benefit from this advance information as well.

2. Testing for Energy Star Compliance: John Repella, Washington Labs

John Repella will examine the product testing process and procedures for Energy Star. Common elements of product evaluation will be discussed, along with an overview of the test setups and test equipment needed to perform the evaluations. Mr. Repella will examine a specific category of equipment, as an example, and will summarize the data collection, reporting and application preparation required for submission for certification.

3. Certification for Energy Star Compliance: Tim Johnson, American Certification Body

Tim Johnson will discuss the certification requirements for products, including the necessary supporting test data, documentation and laboratory requirements for testing. Mr. Johnson will also discuss pitfalls and success vectors for successful certification. One element that is built into the certification process is post-market surveillance or verification auditing. Finally, an overview of the listing process on the EPA’s Energy Star website will be reviewed, along with conditions for removal of products from the listing.

Eamon Monahan:

Eamon Monahan has been at EPA for seven years, the last six in the Office of Air and Radiation. As co-lead for program integrity for the ENERGY STAR products program, he developed and implemented the third-party certification procedures for ENERGY STAR products that became effective January 2011. He oversees the product certification process and serves as the primary contact for EPA-recognized accreditation bodies, laboratories, and certification bodies.

 Tim Johnson

Tim Johnson is Senior Certification Engineer for American Certification Body. Tim has over twenty years in the testing and certification industry and has reviewed and certified numerous devices across the technology spectrum. He has developed techniques and procedures for Energy Star, FCC, Industry Canada and Japan MIC requirements. He launched American Certification Body’s operation in Taiwan and has overseen audit and surveillance programs and contributed to Quality System for compliance with ISO Guide 65 for Certification Bodies.

John Repella

John Repella is an EMC & Wireless Lab Manger at Washington Laboratories, since 8/9/2004:  John has conducted a variety of site surveys in the Nuclear Industry and tested products, systems and components for industries as diverse as aerospace and medical. Until recently John kept the QA processes up-to-speed, which has the extra “bennie” of interfacing with and keeping our accreditors happy. John now balances EMC lab technical duties, schedule and customer projects. John also makes the hottest hots you would ever want to sprinkle on pizza or Chinese food. John is the mad scientist of capsaicin.
