THE
BIRTH OF WILLIE
We're asked
often about the origins of Willie, our lab robot. So,
we're writing an online book about him! We've
published the prologue online.

Saint
Joseph's Mission Fund
is a charitable organization dedicated to providing basic
necessities to the poor and disenfranchised in the most needy
regions of the world.
Based
in Alexandria, Virginia, they work in Southern India and
Africa to provide support for orphanages and schools, an old
age home, a home for children with AIDS and assisting the poor
in obtaining food, shelter and other necessities such as clean
water. Washington Labs is proud to support their efforts; we
hope you'll visit their site, read about all that they do and
consider becoming a sponsor.
Taking Care of Indian Orphans
Ms. Rose is a Catholic nun who worked closely with Father Joseph Swam, founder of the St Joseph mission in Vellamadam in Southern India (in the Tamal Nadu region). Father Swam died a few years ago after devoting his life to helping the neediest; Rose picked up the role of administrator and writes us letters regularly with updates on the struggles and triumphs at St Joseph Mission.
"All the 100 orphans are well and doing fine...10 goats distributed to the poor women...we are getting ready to welcome new children into our home."
This is not in line with our usual Engineering mission, but we found out about a small place in India that caters to orphans, widows and young mothers. Through a colleague, we received a request for assistance for St. Joseph's after the tsunami whacked the area a few years back. As is known, much of the aid and support that came to the afflicted areas was spread via various good--but big--networks; it seemed that it would be more potent to contribute in a directed way. So, along came a request for direct help to St. Joseph's Mission in Vellamadam (which, if you do a quick internet search, you find bupkis, indicating how out-of-the-way it is). There are a lot of sad corners on this planet, but this one, for some reason, struck most poignantly.
The US-based representatives are here. Any little bit helps.

CharityWorks
is a growing philanthropic organization whose mission is to form
partnerships between sponsors, volunteers and non-profit organizations
in the Washington, D.C. area. They have facilitated the awarding
of over $9M in grants to programs such as Habitat for Humanity,
Fisher House, and various education and literacy programs
for lower income "at-risk" students.
One
of their sponsored programs is the CharityWorks GreenHouse,
a project underway in McLean, Virginia to demonstrate new methods of home
construction using sustainable materials and many carbon-neutral
construction techniques. The result will be a
"resource-conservative" living environment that emphasizes the health
and safety of the inhabitants.
Washington Labs is also
sponsoring "Living Well", a documentary about the building
and showcasing of the
GreenHouse. Some video clips from that project:
"The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time to plant a tree is today". -- Remarks by Secretary John McDonough at the Anhui Botanical Gardens
A sapling of the Southern Magnolia, or magnolia grandiflora, planted during the last years of the Qing dynasty would still be producing large white blossoms with their sweet fragrance today. The species, native to the US, has been cultivated all over the world and represents a special link between the US and Anhui for many years.
